About Peter Tompkins
A New Orleans native, Peter obtained his bachelor’s degree in accounting at Louisiana State University in 1983 before attending law school at LSU’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center. After graduating from law school in 1986, Peter worked for another New Orleans law firm for 16 years before joining Murphy, Rogers, Sloss, Gambel and Tompkins as a director in January 2002.
Peter’s practice focuses on the areas of maritime personal injury and casualty claims, land-based personal injury and casualty claims, as well as litigation in the energy sector and insurance and contractual indemnity litigation. Peter enjoys an “AV” rating with Martindale-Hubbell, and he is recognized as a proctor in admiralty by the Maritime Law Association of the United States (MLA).
In addition to the MLA, Peter is a member of the American, Federal, Louisiana and New Orleans Bar Associations, as well as the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute where he has served as a Port Director and editor of its newsletter. He was also a former chair of the American Bar Association’s Admiralty and Maritime Law Committee. His publications include: “Case Law Update: Indemnities in Practice,” Skuld Offshore’s The Field (February 2018), in conjunction with Skuld Offshore and Tarryn Walsh; “Can You Enforce Your Indemnity Rights, Contract Risk Management” in Upstream Oil, 2005; and Contract Risk Management and Insurance, 56th Annual Program on Oil and Gas Law, 2005.
