About Peter Carey
Peter Carey is an associate in Morrison & Foerster’s Global Risk and Crisis Management practice group and a member of the firm’s National Security and Investigations and White Collar Defense groups. His practice focuses on advising clients on sensitive matters relating to national security and global risk and crisis management, including matters that involve multi-jurisdictional investigations, congressional oversight, and significant media attention.
Mr. Carey draws on his significant private sector experience counseling clients in a broad array of criminal and regulatory matters, including government enforcement actions and internal corporate investigations. He also has extensive experience assisting companies across different industries to design, implement, and review the effectiveness of global compliance programs tailored to individualized risk-based assessments.
Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Mr. Carey served as Senior Counsel to Senator Orrin G. Hatch on the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary. During his time with the Committee, Mr. Carey advised Senator Hatch on a range of complex issues, including criminal law, cybersecurity, and oversight matters, and played a central role in negotiating and drafting numerous pieces of legislation. Prior to his work on Capitol Hill, Mr. Carey was a litigator in private practice in the white collar defense and investigations group of a national law firm.
Mr. Carey received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as Articles Editor for the Georgetown Journal of International Law. He also served as a Law Fellow and Senior Writing Fellow in Georgetown’s legal writing program. During law school Mr. Carey interned at the U.S. Department of Justice in both the National Security Division and the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section. Peter earned his M.A. in Security Studies from Georgetown University and his B.A. in Government and Plan II Honors from the University of Texas at Austin.
