About Melvyn Solmon

Melvyn L. Solmon was called to the Bar in Ontario in 1976. He obtained his Masters of Law Degree from Harvard University in 1974. His articling experience included a clerkship at the Supreme Court of Canada in 1974 with the Honourable Mr. Justice Spence. Mel was also called to the Bar in the State of New York in 2003.

He has practiced commercial litigation, receivership and bankruptcy, real estate transaction litigation, arbitrations and complex civil litigation since 1976, including wrongful dismissal, defamation, easements and rights of way, universal life insurance, commercial landlord/tenant, mortgages, professional negligence, debtor/creditor, partnership/ shareholder disputes, and the defence of bank litigation including guarantees. He has extensive trial and appellate experience, and does appellate work, on referral. He has been lead counsel in in excess of 800 reported decisions.

Mel has taught extensively about litigation, trial advocacy skills and has been a member of the faculty of the Osgoode Hall Law School’s Intensive Trial Advocacy Program for over 40 years. He has also taught Trial Advocacy at Notre Dame University, Moncton University, and the University of Toronto. He has written articles on a number of issues, such as pleadings, solicitors’ liens, motion advocacy, trial preparation, litigation strategy and storytelling. He has been invited to speak at programs of the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, Law Society of Upper Canada, Advocates’ Society and Insight programs.
