About Lauren Klein
Lauren G. Klein lives and works on Nantucket year-round. She brings a well-honed combination of training, talent, and temperament to her practice. As a litigator trained “in the trenches” at a well-regarded Wall Street firm, Attorney Klein possesses the familiarity with the law, attention to detail, and forceful powers of persuasion conducive to positive outcomes. In addition, her compassionate and thoughtful nature helps her clients – particularly those going through a divorce – navigate even the roughest of voyages.
Divorce is never easy. The issues and emotions involved can seem overwhelming, the process itself daunting, and the way forward entirely unclear. As a mother who herself went through a trying divorce, Ms. Klein brings first-hand familiarity with the complicated and emotional challenges that accompany the decision to alter one of life’s most important relationships. She is acutely sensitive to the emotional well-being of her clients and their children as they transition to the next chapter of their lives.
As a committed and involved resident of our small island community, Ms. Klein also knows how important it is that clients and adversaries alike be satisfied with the outcome of a divorce proceeding. The rancor and hostility that often result from the escalation of a personal conflict into a legal one can be destructive to the individuals involved, as well as to their families, friends, and the community as a whole. For this reason, she encourages her clients to seek agreement whenever possible – whether through negotiation or mediation. If a fight is necessary, she will advance her client’s interest with tenacious, even fierce, advocacy. But she will work whenever possible toward an outcome that allows both parties to look back without anger, shame, recrimination, or regret.
Ms. Klein received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979, and her J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1983. She served as the first law clerk for the Hon. Edward R. Korman upon his 1985 appointment to the federal bench in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York. She has practiced in the litigation departments of the large New York firm, Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, and the smaller, “boutique” firm, Schlam, Stone & Dolan, and has taught legal research and writing at Brooklyn Law School. Ms. Klein is admitted in the courts of Massachusetts, New York, the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. Her clients benefit from skills and experience gained in a federal and state court practice that spans over three decades.
After nearly fifteen years living year-round on Nantucket, Ms. Klein still delights in the beauty around every corner of the island and frequently feels an active gratitude to live in such a place. To give back to the community she loves, she periodically volunteers her services to A Safe Place, an organization that provides assistance to victims of domestic violence, a cause to which she is deeply committed. Ms. Klein looks forward to continuing to assist other community members for many years to come.
