About Kenneth Engerrand
Kenneth Engerrand utilizes all the weapons available within the legal system to benefit his clients. He puts most of those weapons to work in the courtroom. But some of his most important work involves changing laws that are interpreted unfairly or incorrectly.
For a number of years, he has written articles and prepared briefs that help to successfully change laws in a number of areas important to the interests of Brown Sims clients. His articles are published in legal journals from California to New York and are cited and quoted in opinions of the United States Supreme Court and lower courts all across the country. For instance, his writings have helped to better define who is a seaman and the damages that may be recovered in general maritime law cases.
In addition, Mr. Engerrand lectures to classes and seminars on maritime issues at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Houston, Louisiana State University, Loyola University, South Texas College of Law, the University of St. Thomas, the State Bar of Texas, the State Bar of Louisiana, the U.S. Department of Labor, the Houston Claims Association, the International Association of Drilling Contractors, the National Association of Marine Surveyors, the International Transportation Management Association, the National Business Institute, the Workers’ Compensation Education Conference, and many other groups.
He was an Adjunct Professor at South Texas College of Law for many years, won several teaching excellence awards, and was Faculty Advisor to the Special Maritime Editions of the South Texas Law Journal. He was the recipient of the 2016 Michael Pyryt Award for Collaborative Scholarship.
He is a past Vice Chairman of the Tort and Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association and a past Faculty Member of the Texas College of Trial Advocacy. He has won an “Outstanding Contribution to the Community” Award from the Houston Junior Chamber of Commerce and is a Trustee for the Judge John R. Brown Scholarship Foundation. Each year, Mr. Engerrand administers the contest that conveys the Brown Award for Excellence in Legal Writing. Mr. Engerrand is a Member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States, the American Bar Association, Defense Research Institute, the Mariners Club of Houston, and the Propeller Club of the United States.
Mr. Engerrand is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, United States District Courts for the Southern, Eastern, and Western Districts of Texas, and all courts of the State of Texas.
