Jeff is a West Virginia litigation attorney who accepts cases throughout the state in state and federal courts. He is admitted to practice law in West Virginia and the United States Federal District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia since 2006, the United States Federal District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia since 2008, the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit since 2011, and the United States Supreme Court since 2014. He is also licensed to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Jeff’s membership in several professional organizations and his individual commitment to his profession and clients keep him on the cutting edge of the law. He also expands his professional development by active involvement in relevant legal organizations. In the Defense Research Institute (DRI), he served as chair of DRI’s 2021 Insurance Coverage and Claims Institute and is a member of the Insurance Law Steering Committee; previous chair of the Young Lawyer Section within DRI’s Insurance Law Committee, the Committee on Professionalism and Civility for Young Lawyer Steering Committee, and the Expert Witness Database Subcommittee for Young Lawyer Steering Committee;

Jeff is also active in The Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC) and the Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia (DTCWV), where he has served as a member of the Board of Governors since 2016, is the current Secretary of the Executive Committee and previously chaired the Young Lawyer Committee; and the Harrison County Bar Association, where holds the office of Vice President.

After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in history from the College of Wooster, Jeff Van Volkenburg obtained his Juris Doctor at Duquesne University College of Law. He was also chosen for a summer clerkship with the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

After graduation, Jeff served as a law clerk for the Honorable John L. Henning, in the Circuit Court of Randolph County, WV, and attended the IADC Trial Academy at Stanford University and The University of Virginia Trial Advocacy College.

Before forming Varner & Van Volkenburg, PLLC with the other founding partners, Jeff was a shareholder at McNeer, Highland, McMunn & Varner, L.C. for 12 years. Throughout his practice, Jeff has earned the reputation of providing high-quality, statewide insurance coverage defense in WV.
