 Mars is a fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, has been selected as a Mountain States Super Lawyer, is certified with the National Board of Trial Advocacy, elected as one of America’s top 100 attorneys in the state of Montana, is the immediate past Chairperson of the State Bar of Montana Family Law Section, past Chairperson of the State Bar of Montana Domestic Relations Study Commission, a member of the State Bar of Montana Professionalism Committee, a member of the Montana Trial Lawyers Association, and a current member of the Montana Supreme Court Commission on Technology’s Electronic-Filing and Remote Access Task Force.

Mars was raised in Helena. He graduated from the University of Montana with dual honor degrees in psychology and political science. As an undergraduate, he was a member of the varsity tennis team and a member of Silent Sentinel. Mars then worked for the United States Senate as a legislative aide. In 1980, he received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Montana School of Law. After law school, he worked for a law firm doing insurance defense, labor, banking and corporate law. In 2000, Mars started his own law firm, emphasizing the practice of family law. Mars is retired from the United States Naval Reserves as an intelligence officer earning the rank of Commander. Mars is married and has two adult children. He is active in the Missoula community and enjoys hiking, biking, tennis, skiing, and spending time at Flathead Lake.
