About Larry Kimball
Attorney Kimball grew up in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, graduating from Lead High School in 1973. He attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion South Dakota, graduating Cum Laude in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy and minors in psychology, mathematics and foreign language.
While at U.S.D. Mr. Kimball was made a member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1978, participating heavily in Hellenistic studies. Mr. Kimball earned a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Minnesota in 1984, and was admitted to practice in the Minnesota State Bar in 1984 and the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota in 1986. Mr. Kimball served as a law clerk for the Hon. Lawrence T. Collins from 1984 to 1985, working out of Chambers in Winona, Winona County, Minnesota, and serving the surrounding counties of Wabasha and Houston.
Attorney Kimball then entered private practice working as an associate for the law firm of Finn & Mattson in Walker, Minnesota, in September of 1985. While there Kimball worked in a variety of small town legal areas, including family law, probate, real estate, bankruptcy, and criminal defense. In addition to the Court-appointed rotation for criminal defense, juvenile law, and civil commitments, Kimball worked with the Leech Lake Juvenile and Criminal Defense Corporation in the counties of Cass, Itasca, Hubbard, and Beltrami. Also, Kimball assisted the Firm in servicing contracts with the Leech Lake Reservation Business Committee, White Earth Business Committee, and the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe Finance Corporation.
Mr. Kimball opened a solo practice in 1988 after the dissolution of the Finn & Mattson firm, continuing a general small-town practice with emphasis on criminal defense, largely through the Leech Lake Criminal and Juvenile Defense Corporation, and real estate, largely through the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe Finance Corporation. Kimball has associated in the past with local attorney Stephen Baker, who maintains a solo practice next door to KLO, and attorney Christopher Strandlie, who left private practice to serve in the Cass County Attorney’s Office in 1999, becoming Cass County Attorney in 2008.
