About Laurie Sands
Laurie J. Sands is Counsel in the Firm’s Environmental Group and has focused her legal career on environmental law issues. She represents clients in complex environmental litigation, including claims under CERCLA, RCRA, the Water Pollution Control Act and the New Jersey Spill Act. She has negotiated numerous settlements involving clean-up costs for contaminated sites and natural resource damages. Laurie also routinely counsels clients with respect to regulatory compliance and transactions involving contaminated property. Prior to beginning her legal career, she spent six years at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (“NJDEP”). This experience has helped Laurie in approaching all aspects of her legal practice.
Additionally, Laurie focuses on environmental issues concerning the shipping industry, including the North American Emission Control Area, ballast water management and vessel permitting. She has spoken on these issues at the ACI Admiralty and Maritime Conference held in Houston each year and was a past Chair of the ABA Admiralty and Maritime Law Committee. She also belongs to the Maritime Law Association and has a Master’s Degree from the University of Rhode Island in Marine Policy.
Laurie is a past Chair of the Environmental Law Section of the New Jersey Bar Association. She serves on the ABA Task Force on Federal Involvement in Insurance Regulation Modernization (FIIRM) and Health Care Reform (HCR). She is a former Barrister of the Justice Stewart G. Pollock Environmental Inn of Court.
