About Steven Shuman
Mr. Shuman has spent his entire legal career with Engstrom, Lipscomb & Lack. He is a seasoned litigator and trial attorney. He is admitted to the California Bar, the United States District Courts for the Central, Southern, Northern, and Eastern Districts of California, and the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. He is rated “AV” (Preeminent) by Martindale-Hubbell, the largest peer-rated organization, which means his peers rank him at the highest level of professional excellence.
Since the late 1990s, Mr. Shuman’s practice has focused on business and insurance litigation matters for individuals, businesses, and groups of people victimized by breaches of contract, fraud and negligent misrepresentation, negligence, interference, professional negligence, breaches of the covenant of good faith and fair dealing in both the insurance and commercial context and other business torts. Notable successes include participation in trials resulting in recoveries of $32 million in a case where his clients were wrongfully deprived of their share of a business and $10.2 million in a lender liability case by an individual against one of the country’s largest banks. He is responsible for multiple other recoveries of a million dollars or more. In the earlier stages of his career, Mr. Shuman practiced in the fields of insurance coverage, insurance defense and general business matters. During the 1990’s he was one of about three attorneys in Southern California with expertise in jewelry insurance.
Mr. Shuman received his J.D. in 1978 from UCLA Law School, where he was a member of the UCLA Law Review. He received his B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Riverside, graduating in three years with highest honors. He is a member of the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles and the Consumer Attorneys of California. He is currently serving his fourth two-year term on the UC Riverside Alumni Association Board of Directors, and has chaired its Alumni Engagement Committee and served on its Executive Committee. He has also for many years chaired the UCR Alumni Scholarship Committee covering northern Los Angeles County, which annually awards an alumni scholarship to an incoming student. Mr. Shuman has published on the subject of enforcing foreign judgments. Mr. Shuman is happily married to his wife of 35 years, and they have three adult children.
