About William Goodman

Winner of the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association “Champion of Justice” Award and named Public Interest Trial Lawyer of the Year, Bill Goodman is a graduate of the University of Chicago, with both a Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees.

Bill practices civil rights law with Goodman & Hurwitz P.C., representing families and individuals who have been the victims of police and other governmental misconduct. He has handled dozens of cases against various governments, including the United States, cities, states and counties He also recently represented the Detroit City Council, as Special Counsel, in its historic struggle to remove Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

Between 1998 and 2007, Goodman was Legal Director at the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York, where he spearheaded many of the legal and political efforts to hold back the excesses of the Bush Administration against the Bill of Rights. These, in particular, included taking leadership in the fight against indefinite detention at Guantanamo and unconstitutional electronic surveillance.

Bill Goodman is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Wayne State University where he teaches Civil Rights Law. He is a past president of the National Lawyers Guild.

Over the years he has authored several articles in the field of civil rights and constitutional law. He is admitted to practice law in both Michigan and New York.
