About Katharine Kates
Katharine Kates is Senior Litigation Counsel at Ramsey & Ehrlich LLP. She represents individuals in white collar criminal defense matters, regulatory enforcement cases, and investigations by the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and other governmental authorities. Her cases have involved alleged insider trading, accounting fraud, antitrust violations, mail and wire fraud, honest services fraud, mortgage fraud, health care fraud, and theft of trade secrets.
Prior to joining Ramsey & Ehrlich, Ms. Kates represented both plaintiffs and defendants in a wide variety of business litigation at O’Neill, Lysaght & Sun in Santa Monica and at Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal (now Denton’s) in San Francisco. This experience included securities class actions, commercial contract disputes, government contract litigation, employment matters, and trade secret litigation. In addition, Ms. Kates has worked as a staff attorney for the Central District of California, where she analyzed pro se civil rights cases and habeas corpus petitions.
Ms. Kates has represented clients before both trial and appellate courts. She has briefed successful Ninth Circuit and Federal Circuit appeals and California state court appeals. In addition, as a pro-bono special public defender, she represented defendants at trial in Marin County.
